Atelier de Troupe design a tribute to Schindler’s L.A.

(US) - From 2018 onwards the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s Fitzpatrick-Leland House in Laurel Canyon will play host to a series of ongoing design-centric exhibitions and programming. The exhibition kicks off with Pin-up: A Designed Tribute to Schindler’s L.A. This show brings together four Los Angeles-based designers and one artist around the Austrian-born California modernist architect R.M. Schindler: Atelier de Troupe, led by Gabriel Abraham; Brendan Ravenhill; Pamela Shamshiri with John Williams; and long-time Schindler advocates Marmol Radziner.

The Fitzpatrick-Leland House (1936) was originally commissioned by developer Clifton Fitzpatrick as a spec house (a real estate promotion to attract buyers to the new housing tracts in Laurel Canyon). Schindler’s now classically modernist design established the area as a common ground for L.A.’s cultural and political avant-garde, and the house continues to inspire today’s thriving creative community.

Atelier de Troupe first paid tribute to Schindler during Milan Design Week in April 2017. Staying true to his passion for ambiance, artistic director Gabriel Abraham, a former film set designer, drew on the iconic modernist to create a collection of light fixtures and furniture inspired by the 1920s and reimagined for Los Angeles today. Atelier de Troupe then partnered with the other featured Pin-upparticipants at the Triode Gallery in Paris this past September for an installation that was deemed one of Paris Design Week’s '10 Must See.' That exhibition inspired the studio to install a show of these Schindler-inspired designers in the Fitzpatrick-Leland House.

Slamp announces new Veli mini couture collection

(Italy) - Slamp has added to their product portfolio with three suspension lamps that evoke pure romanticism.

The delicate, Veli Mini Single Couture suspension lamp is sartorially handmade in Slamp’s Italian atelier, with every individual bend made of tone-on-tone printed Opalflex®, a patented technopolymer.

The bends are collectively fitted around a central cap, giving the suspension a soft and original feel. A red wrapped cord brings the lamp a touch of irony (but can be replaced with a transparent one) while the magnetic hanging device makes installation and maintenance quick and easy.

INDEX 2018 announces central theme

(UAE) - INDEX 2018 have announced ‘Design for self-expression’ as the central theme of this year’s show.

With a diverse and creative catalogue of exhibitors, INDEX will celebrate design as a direct reflection of individuality.

Samantha Kane-Macdonald, event director at INDEX, said: “Clients and end users have more creative input than they have ever had when dealing with interior designers, product designers and contractors, no matter what the scale of the project.

“With that, the pendulum of control has swung back to the people. The design mantra is more and more about incorporating the traits of the individual; their beliefs, their experiences, their ambitions - never before have interiors, furniture and décor been considered such a direct reflection of those who own the space.

“Allowing scope for personal self-expression is already becoming more important when thinking about an interior space. For 2018, INDEX will critique the way we express our individuality through the products we source for our interiors, be that at work or at home.

“With a forecast of over 1,000 exhibitors coming to INDEX from 60 different countries, our 2018 show will offer a wealth of products for those hoping to find that item which will allow their client’s project to feel uniquely theirs.”

This will be the second time in the event’s 28-year history that INDEX will incorporate a theme.

Willowlamp launches ‘Small Space’ collection

(SA) - South African lighting design company, willowlamp, has launched an accessible ‘Small Space’ collection, the perfect solution for compact urban spaces.

The new pendants vary in design and range from the small Babylove, styled on a four-leaf clover, to Moroccan-style lamps that invoke the beauty of North Africa. Each has been created to hang in a small home or apartment, whilst still creating a big impact as one of the larger willowlamp statement pieces.

“We have enjoyed a great success with our original designs and are still producing our traditional larger installations but we also wanted to expand and create smaller lights that elevate more compact spaces,” Creative Director, Adam Hoets, said of the new collection.

“The new designs give clients a level of creativity in their homes as well, the smaller installations can either hang on their own or can be grouped together to produce something entirely unique. We also see this as a great opportunity to move out of the residential market as the smaller pendants would work equally well in a commercial space, such as a restaurant.”

Folio - Serip

The Folio collection has the intensity of a still moment directly drawn from nature. The natural form reflects the arbitrary composition of patterns in a complex set resulting in a sense of an enchanted environment. Interesting results come from vertical compositions of its floating structure and serene expression.
