Catellani & Smith - DiscO
Catellani & Smith presents DiscO, the new ceiling lamp that reinterprets the historic 'Disco' halogen model, yet respects its original design. The transformation carried out from a technological point of view starts from the light source, a latest generation low voltage COB LED, dimmable and with high luminous efficiency, which is housed inside a semi-cylindrically shaped element, made of polished aluminium.
In the previous model, this element worked as a reflector in connection with the R7s halogen source; in the new DiscO, it performs a totally different function, related to the LED lighting source, and plays a key role as an innovative - patent pending - heat sink. The circular disc of the halogen model is replaced by an oval-shaped disc of 75 x 50cm, as the name of the lamp recalls in the final capital 'O' which summarises its evolution.
Made of iron and available in white finish or in gold, silver or copper coloured leaf coating, the oval disc features a larger reflective surface in comparison to the previous model. Finally, the characteristic 'cone' in nickel-plated brass, placed at the centre of the disc, is included in
this new LED version.
Hubbardton Forge focused on commercial growth
(USA) - US-based lighting manufacturer adds to sales team.
Existing employee Amy McGuire has been promoted to the role of National Commercial Sales Manager, while Jacqueline Matusek has joined the team as A&D Sales Specialist in New York City.
A 17-year veteran of Hubbardton Forge, McGuire has a deep knowledge of the brand and understanding of design trends. A graduate of FIT in NYC, her early experience in the fashion and music industries gives McGuire a unique perspective when it comes to design and working with the creative community. Her ability to share her expertise in emerging lighting technologies and interest in understanding each partner’s individual projects, allow her to work with specifiers and purchasers in developing the right lighting solutions for the toughest challenges.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the dynamic and innovative hospitality and commercial community," says McGuire. "I welcome the opportunity to create new relationships and to contribute to A&D firms’ lighting design for their projects.”
Matusek’s first trip to Hubbardton Forge goes back a number of years, during the development of the Synchronicity line of lighting. At the time, Matusek was in business development with Swarovski Professional, working closely with HF’s Design Director, David Kitts on a new line of high-end lighting incorporating crystals.
From there began a relationship that was centred around the artisanry and striving for quality that she felt was an absolute 'must' for success at a commercial level: “The most rewarding part about working with design clients is collaborating on ideas and coming up with unique solutions for all types of projects," she says. "The design possibilities at HF are certainly endless but it’s the creative process, when our ideas really start to take form, that I truly enjoy.”
Prior to her years at Swarovski, Matusek served as Northeast Regional Manager for THG Paris, and as Area Sales Manager for Artemide. In her new role with Hubbardton Forge, she will be calling on her existing portfolio as well as other NYC-based clients in the architectural and design communities.
“The world has clearly changed…but, people will get back to travelling, enjoying the dining experience, getting back to work and their daily lives,” said Chris Recchia, Vice President of Sales for Hubbardton Forge. “But, the value of design has become even more important, as a touchpoint with the ability to enhance each person’s life.”

Faro - Guest
Designed by Andreu Carulla, Guest is a hybrid object that works as a lamp and bedside table, thereby reinventing the concept of lighting and furniture. A base for books with inherent light functions to read them. Its shape reminds us of the letter G and its name invites the light, moment and the space to be shared.
Dowsing & Reynolds - Peg
Peg wall lights are a simple way to add secondary lighting to your interiors. Featuring a sleek cord set fully assembled with a farrier bronze lamp holder, inline switch and plug, this fixture plugs into your wall socket and suspends from the wooden peg. Light + Building 2020 cancelled
(Germany) - International trade show will not take place until 2022.
In view of the global situation caused by the Corona pandemic, and the prohibitions on events and travel restrictions associated with it, Messe Frankfurt has decided, jointly with its partners – ZVEI and ZVEH – and with the Trade Fair Advisory Council, to cancel this year's Light + Building and to hold it, in accordance with its normal sequence, from 13 - 18 March 2022.
This year's event was, at first, postponed to September, however as time has gone on, there has been much speculation within the lighting industry as to whether the event would definitely take place. A number of exhibitors had been reportedly disgruntled with the last-minute rescheduling of the show and lighting designers darc has spoken to have also been unconvinced as to whether they would attend a September show given the incurred extra costs for flights and accommodation.
In an official statement from the organisers, Wolfgang Marzin said: "The current regulations, combined with continued global travel restrictions and the potential threat to individual health, make it impossible to hold Light + Building in 2020.
"At the same time, in the interests of exhibitors and visitors, we must avoid unnecessary costs in good time. The decision has not been easy for any of us, but now we shall be directing our energies to holding the next Light + Building in its accustomed sequence in 2022."
This decision also affects Intersec Building. Now, as a platform for connected security technology, the format will celebrate its premiere as an integral part of Light + Building in 2022.
"Light + Building is of quite particular importance for companies engaged in lighting and building services technology – it is here that industries with the latest technologies look far into the future. However much we regret the cancellation, we are also in favour of it," said ZVEI President Michael Ziesemer. "Given the manifold uncertainties and challenges, it was right to make this decision now, jointly and in a dialogue between partners."
The chairman of the ZVEI Association for Electrical Installation Systems, Daniel Hager, added: "In the present situation we would not have been able to experience the positive, cooperative and innovative spirit which Light + Building has embodied from its very start. Everybody's mind is elsewhere and social distancing is not suitable for a trade fair. So we should all look forward: the fair will continue to exist, as a beacon for the industry and as a platform rich in the exchange of ideas. I am sure: in March 2022, with new energy, we shall have a better starting point for the fair."
Manfred Diez provided the following analysis from the perspective of the ZVEI Association for Light: "The light industry is a very innovative sector, with many new products and technologies. To show these to a broad public, Light + Building is one of our most important tools. To make sure it stays so", continues the Association's chairman, "we must all pull together."
At the same time ZVEH President Lothar Hellmann emphasised: "Over the past 20 years Light + Building has developed into 'the' information and technology platform for the industry. What makes this leading international trade fair so vital is the intensive exchange which takes place between its participants. That there is nothing to replace the personal meeting, despite all modern communication, has been a major experience during the corona crisis. I am therefore looking forward with pleasurable anticipation to Light + Building 2022, at which climate protection, electromobility and digitalisation will provide a major focus."
Holger Heckler also had some words to say on the matter. The chairman of the VEG (German Electrical Wholesalers' Association) said: "We can perfectly understand this decision. It is really unfortunate for the electrical industry that Light + Building cannot be held in 2020 and we must manage as best we can without our most important trade fair. But health comes first."

Nulty launches lockdown photo competition
(UK) – Competition asks participants to share inspirational moments of light.
Nulty has unveiled a new photography competition, inviting participants to “look at the way light enhances our everyday lives” in an attempt to find positivity in the darkness.
The competition, entitled ‘Light Up Your Lockdown’ will run until 15 May, and asks people to seek out and capture inspirational moments of light through a camera lens.
“Whether it be a beautiful shaft of light across the wall or floor in the home, or the mesmerising way light filters through a tree on a daily walk, the idea is to share personal experiences of light, together,” the design studio said.
To enter the competition, participants need to take a photograph of light that expresses how they feel, and post it on Instagram using @nultylighting and the hashtag #lightupyourlockdown. At the end of the competition, the team at Nulty will vote for their three favourite photographs; winners will then be announced on Instagram on Tuesday 19 May. The three successful entries will win a Mathmos Lava Lamp.

George Singer - Zephyr Installation
The Zephyr installation is designed to reflect the surrounding nature: the crashing waves, the long grasses blowing in the wind, the enormous cloud formations, the rolling hills, the murmurations of starlings, shoals of fish and the blossom trees, and the sheer energy and beauty of St Andrew’s Bay in Scotland. A previous [d]arc awards winner, George Singer wanted to create an installation that reflected and encapsulated all of these things as highlighted in this video.
