Donizetti Theatre, Italy

Catellani & Smith lighting shines in Bergamo’s Donizetti Theatre. The renovation work that began in 2019 on the historical Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo - which takes its name from the world-famous composer native to the city – has now been completed.

With a history stretching back over more than two centuries, the Theatre is a prestigious, lively centre of culture and social life for Bergamo, thanks to the numerous events organised over the years.

The complex renovation and restoration project involved the functional renovation of all the boxes, the ceiling of the stalls and the foyer, as well as the reorganisation and reconstruction of a number of areas, such as the room for the orchestra in the area beneath the stalls, the orchestra pit, the dressing rooms, the ticket office, the bars, the offices in the west wing, the rehearsal rooms and the areas reserved for catering and activities for the public. The decorative elements were also subjected to restoration of a mainly conservative nature, consisting of cleaning and retouching the paintings on the ceilings and walls.

As for the exterior of the building, the redevelopment project regarded the main façade, the sides and the scenic tower. For all the sections, the materials used were chosen with a view to guaranteeing continuity with the original structure, not only in order to preserve the architectural elements, but also to transmit a sign of innovation and technology to the new appearance of the Theatre.

In this scenario, Catellani & Smith was chosen to provide the lighting for part of the renovation project, with creations immediately visible right from the large foyer of the theatre, featuring a large, spectacular frescoed wall, where a series of Medousê W hemispheres - in transparent glass and with a deliberately uneven surface – have been installed in sequence on the columns.

On the upper floor, and visible from the outside through the large windows of the building, which look out onto the city’s famous “Sentierone” tree-lined avenue, visitors can admire the 56 Petits Bijoux and Macchina della Luce ceiling lamps, two models with a striking visual impact that blend beautifully into the splendour of the setting.

Installed in the space immediately adjacent to the music rooms, the 56 Petits Bijoux lamps are composed of a lightweight structure, shaped by a composition of brass circles with different dimensions.

Supporting each other with slender cables, the circles create the sensation of a lamp floating, suspended and free, in the space that occupies the large hall. Like little guardians of the light, transparent covers positioned on the circles enclose high light efficiency LED lights producing a total of 8008lm.

Two elegant Macchina della Luce lamps, composed of disks of different diameters covered in gold-coloured leaf, are featured in the Missiroli Hall, filling it with their golden light.

Finally, the modern lines of a Lederam C180, installed on the ceiling of one of the halls in the Donizetti Theatre, enhance the splendid frescoes depicting floral motifs and female figures, striking an interesting contrast with the purple walls.

The gold-coloured leaf that covers the circular screen of Lederam C180 creates a sense of continuity with the golden ceiling, as does the satin rod that supports the swivelling disk that contains a COB LED module.

Catellani & Smith opens new showroom in Bergamo

(Italy) - The new Catellani & Smith showroom is set to open its doors in Bergamo, in Borfuro 1, right in the heart of the city.

Moving well beyond the concept of a simple exhibition space, the showroom will also offer meeting and co-working facilities for customers and architects, as well as the new Italian sales office.

Designed by Capponi General Contractor, who took care of the layout, and by the interior designer Francesca Ravasio, the showroom is spread over three levels, totalling almost 500sqm.

Catellani & Smith’s new home is more than just a new store in the heart of Bergamo’s Lower Town. It has been conceived not only as a place where customers can view the company’s products, but also as a meeting place for architects and other figures in the sector. The spacious, clear distribution of the areas is able to meet both the current and future requirements of a company in continual expansion on the international market.

On the ground floor, with the main entrance in the gallery, the large open-plan area features an inviting living area and an area with meeting rooms. Visitors will have the opportunity to evaluate the details, finishes and light effects of the lamps selected for display, which will be changed several times throughout the year.

The furnishings and the layout of the areas have been designed to create an atmosphere that makes guests feel at home – rather than on a visit to a store – when they step into the showroom to view the lamps and receive advice for their purchases.

Located on the upper floor are the new sales offices for Italy, which have moved here from the headquarters in Villa di Serio, in response to the growth registered on the Italian market. A spacious room will be used for meetings with customers and Italian agents.

The basement floor will be reserved for corporate events, exclusive previews of new collections, training sessions and further training workshops for international trading partners, or installations and exhibitions. The industrial-style structure will allow for continual changes to the facility.

Catellani & Smith wins Good Design Award 2021

(Italy) - Catellani & Smith’s U. lamp wins the prestigious Good Design Award 2021

Catellani & Smith has won its first Good Design Award for the lamp U., recognised for its innovative character, original concept and extreme functionality.

The Good Design Award, one of the most prestigious and longstanding awards in the world of design, was instituted in 1950 by the former curator of the Chicago MoMA, Edgar Kaufmann Jr, in collaboration with some of the biggest names in modern design including Charles and Ray Eames, Russell Wright, Eero Saarinen, and George Nelson.

The Good Design Award is presented by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, which recognises each year’s best products in terms of innovation, form, materials, concept, construction, functionality, utility, sustainability, packaging and aesthetics. Works selected for recognition are carefully reviewed by a panel of distinguished design professionals, industry specialists and journalists, according to the criteria established by the original 1950 programme.

U. is a family of minimalist lamps. It includes two floor versions, U. F Up and U. F Flex, and two wall-mounted variations, U. W Flex and U. W, all available in black or white finish with a low voltage COB LED light source. U. F Up features a U-shaped semi-cylindrical screen, the inside coated with gold-coloured leaf. As well as containing the light source, the screen holds a steel silhouette equipped with a magnet, projecting the image of a dancing figure.

U. F Flex is notable for its adjustable brass flex and its screen, slightly smaller than the Up model, that rotates 350° to direct light as needed.

The U. W Flex wall- lamp is also characterised by a brass flex, positioned atop a rectangular base, and by the typical U shape holding the COB LED light source that creates a golden glow. Finally, the other wall-lamp, U. W, rests on a circular base with a joint that allows the semicylindrical screen to rotate, casting beams of light that spread across the whole wall.

Magic Circus - Upside Down

New from the Magic Circus, Upside Down lamp by Marie-Lise Féry takes inspiration from children's games and their geometric forms.

"I focused my research on regular forms and the clear, plain lines recalled by geometric figures in space. Like the simple construction games we used to play with as children, with all their endless possibilities, these geometric volumes appeared to me to be just as conceivable in one direction as in another," says Féry.

"Upside or inverted, these geometric volumes allow me to play with my imagination, turning this compilation of pieces into abstract and figurative forms. These ceiling lights with geometric shapes and their extraordinary sizes and materials offer a completely new interpretation of form.

"The remarkable work produced by Vetrarti’s glassblowers, the preciousness of the materials, and its outsized formats allow this ensemble, in principle very simple, to read as delicate and theatrical and almost fantastical."

Salone del Mobile Milan moves to June

(Italy) - The 60th edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano moves to June 2022.

With a view to organising a 60th edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano that fully reflects the importance of the event, the Board of Federlegno Arredo Eventi, in agreement with Fiera Milano, has elected to postpone the event, which will now take place from 7 - 12 June 2022.

Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, says: “The decision to postpone the event will enable exhibitors, visitors, journalists and the entire international furnishing and design community to make the very most of an event that promises to be packed with new things, in total safety. As well as celebrating a major anniversary, the event will focus on the theme of sustainability, acting as a showcase for the progress made in this regard by creatives, designers and companies. Moving the event to June will ensure a strong presence of foreign exhibitors and professionals, which has always been one of the Salone’s strong points, and it will also give the participating companies time to plan their presence at the fair as thoroughly as possible given that, as we know, the progression from concept to final installation takes months of preparation. The desire for a Salone is increasingly strong, which is why we are working towards an event that will give everyone an opportunity to enjoy a unique, concrete and exciting experience. We are all really longing for a Salone.”
