david pompa launches new collection

(Mexico) - david pompa unveils new lighting collection that uses Fiorito natural stone.

Coming in three variations, the pendant, wall and table lamps, the Origo collection uses natural stone to create sculptural lamps.

Origo pendant white becomes the perfect complement of the iconic Origo. In this lighter version, fiorito transforms the tone palette into an equilibrium of light and fresh grey tones. A balance of round shapes that vary in weight and function. A perfect sculptural object by day and a rich illuminated texture by night.

Flipping horizontally, Origo's wall light becomes a new element as it shines on the surface behind. The contrast of the materials becomes more evident, yet the light stone colour allows a soft interaction. The opal glass illuminates the Fiorito stone, uncovering its nature and character.

A compact size with a pleasant warm light. Becoming the perfect complement to the Origo pendant, the smooth dimmer allows Origo table to shift from sculpture to table lamp, unveiling its gradient of textures. A balance of shapes that grant an elegant aesthetic through its functionality.

The Fiorito material is quarried in Puebla, Mexico. A light grey-coloured natural stone, which encloses small fossil remains, giving it a white tone relief. Its beige tone makes it very easy for use in neutral contemporary projects and is a materials that has been used both in America and Europe throughout ancient times due to its durability. Typically used for floors and walls due to its strong resistance, this stone is easy to work with since it allows several surface finishes. david pompa's Fiorito is handcrafted in Mexico City, were its cylindrical form is shaped. The precise procedure enhances its physical characteristics, giving it its form through manual precise techniques.

Studiopepe designs Nastro collection for Tooy

(Italy) - New lighting collection Nastro designed by Studiopepe is launched for Tooy in a debut collaboration.

It is an important step for the young Italian brand, giving start to a series of designer collaborations to be unveiled in the upcoming months.

The Italian illumination brand Tooy collaborates for the first time with Studiopepe giving start to a series of designer collaborations who are able to coherently interpret and enrich the young, dynamic and curious soul of the brand.

Studiopepe says of the collaboration: “These lamps perform their practical function in a silent and poetic way defining the space. In the Nastro collection, we wanted to combine a flexible and supple element like a ribbon (“nastro" in Italian) with a more stable and fixed element like a precious weight and declined in a new palette of materials and colours.

"We have always been fascinated by the juxtaposition of very different elements whose union create a new meaning. Lightness vs weight, mobility vs stability, light vs shadow, the Nastro project for Tooy was created to give body and light to these concepts.”

The new collection has debuted at De-siderio, the virtual manifesto project by Studiopepe. “It’s no longer a physical place that reflects our projects, but an imaginary architecture created in order to connect projects, told through a video that uses the poetic and synaesthetic language typical of art, creating references, connections, dialogues, analogies.”

The Valigia from Stilnovo is re-released

Picture: Gianni Antoniali

(Italy) - The Valigia by Ettore Sottsass is back in production with a design faithful to the original, conceived in 1977 and manufactured by Stilnovo ever since.

Valigia is ironic and informal: the small handle and the two bearing arches in red piping are connected to the metal vault, which contains the light. The result is a fun and versatile lamp, a symbolic invitation to travel, which is hopeful for the time when we will once again be free world travellers.

The red and black represent a typical colour combination loved by the designer, so much so that it is also found in other products of his such as the Valentine typewriter for Olivetti and the Mandarin chair for Knoll. The vaulted section is also an expressive geometry typical of Sottsass, which can be found in many of his products, as well as in abstract drawings, including the famous axonometric projection Monumental Architecture.

Valigia is the fifth lamp designed by Sottsass for Stilnovo after Ortros, Lampros and Manifesto in 1968, Sinus in 1973 and Don which, like Valigia, dates back to 1977.

Seletti launches new lamp, Wonder

(Italy) - Seletti launches new product Wonder table lamp from collaboration with Uto Balmoral.

Italian design brand Seletti presents its first collaboration with Uto Balmoral, a virtual personality provocatively created from the start to be, as an identity, the product itself.

Wonder table lamp unites irreverent pop spirit and classical reminiscence, crossing the boundary between design and art in an object that combines decoration and usability.
The shapes of the Wonder lamp suggest the aesthetic of classical statues, part of a shared collective imagery: a male head moulded entirely from resin faithfully reproduces the features of the models of classical art, creating a visible and tactile short-circuit between the actual material used and marble. The man is immortalised in an unusual and contemporary pose, blowing a bubble of gum: as he blows, the man furrows his brows and crosses his eyes, as if to ask what the purpose of this playful act is, on the cusp between pastime and boredom. The bubble, in the typical pale pink colour of chewing-gum, is made of glass and hides inside itself an LED that lights the room with a soft, diffused light.

In this project Uto Balmoral explains the desire to create an object with a strong expressive and metaphorical significance that rises above the mere aesthetic. “Renaissance art is the symbol of a never-repeated beauty that still represents Italy in the world. Wonder creates an unexpected and interesting space-time and cultural displacement. The action of blowing a bubble of gum is somehow revolutionary and irreverent, it is not exactly a sign of good manners, but at the same time it represents the light-heartedness of the daydreamer, the person who likes to be surprised and to fantasise, the young and free. It is a great image that we should always have in mind.”

Stefano Seletti, the brand's Art Director says:“Uto Balmoral’s creative thought is very similar to Seletti’s. This new project perfectly synthesises the way in which we have always approached the theme of lighting, with a vision that’s light-hearted, playful and at the same time innovative. Wonder tells a story by reinterpreting, transforming and modernising archetypal forms of the past.”

The Perfect Light Project - Is LED the answer?

A film by Light Collective: "Is LED the Perfect Light Source? About 3.5 years ago we realised that 90% of our lighting design projects had moved to LED’s as the main source of electric light. Unlike any light source development before, LEDs have superseded and replaced most other sources and potentially rendered them obsolete. We decided to ask a number of lighting designers if LED was, therefore, the Perfect Light? Were we in the middle of the greatest revolution since the invention of the light bulb?

"We finished the film about 3 years ago and showed it first in London, Paris, Berlin, New York and Milan. It has since been shown in 16 other countries at private events. We have decided to put the film on-line now and ask the question - what has changed? Have things moved on in the last 3.5 years and LED has started to become the dominant source in our homes as well as commercial lighting. Do you think LED has improved or has it stagnated, is LED the perfect light source and what do you want to see in the future? Please share this film with your friends and colleagues - we want the debate to be all inclusive."

Samuel Wilkinson launches new lamp, Peacock

(UK) - Peacock is Samuel Wilkinson's fourth collaboration with Italian brand Ex.t following two variants of Gravity mirror and Float mirror/shelf/lamp.

Designed by English designer Samuel Wilkinson, Peacock is a minimal lamp that reveals its hidden beauty as you pass by. A domed borosilicate glass diffuser is neatly positioned within the outer glass cone so that when illuminated, a radiating reflection fans out across the surface, reminiscent of the way a peacock’s plumage. The contemporary luminaire is rated specifically for the bathroom – IP 44 – and is available in pendant and wall lamp variations.

The lamp comes from a sustainable mindset, with efficient manufacturing, reduced components and all separable materials at the end of life. The same inner component and mould (one full / one trimmed) is used for both variations.

Studio Drift launches holiday purchase benefits

(The Netherlands) - Studio Drift include illustration by artist Lonneke Gordijn and percentage of profit to charity Sheltersuit, an initiative to give temporary homes to the less fortunate, with holiday purchase.

An Illustration by artist Lonneke Gordijn. Only available with the 2020 Dandelight.

The studio says: "Drift's Dandelight, made of a real dandelion, connects you to nature at home during the holidays. Only now, we are including a special holiday illustration by artist Lonneke Gordijn.

"With current social restrictions it will be a time of adaptation. What better way to bring some lightness during these times than with our Dandelight, replacing the ordinary candle with a unique holiday gift. This extraordinary artwork poetically portrays a positive scenario for the future.

"Based on labor intensive processes that symbolise the fragility of life, our artwork is a statement against the throwaway culture. Made from real dandelions that are carefully collected during the spring season in the Netherlands, the seeds are put on the LED by hand and form a subtle and aesthetic light. A composition that will add some character to your home setting."

Archiproducts Design Awards announce winners

(Italy) - The Archiproducts Design Awards announce this year's winners.

The UK-based brand takes a responsible and sustainable approach to its production, crafting functional pieces with long lasting quality, with sustainability at its core.

Celebrating its three months as a climate positive workforce, the company has partnered with Ecologi, which allows employee's carbon footprints, including emissions from their home, personal travel, holidays, food, hobbies and more are offset.
